Presenter: Dr. Brian Mondy Some of the most creative comedy explores issues, such as race or sexual relationships, that make many people uncomfortable. “That’s not funny” is a common response to humor that is regarded as immoral or offensive, but can it be justified? Whether it can be justified seems to depend on the relationship of two issues: (1) what it is that makes something immoral; and (2) what it is that makes something funny. Philosophers and academics have paid a lot of attention to the first issue, but less attention to the second issue. In this talk I address some of the more plausible views of what makes something funny, what makes something immoral, and how the two might be related. Exploring the relationship not only sheds light on when it is appropriate to say “That’s not funny,” but also helps to illuminate issues about the subjectivity or objectivity of values. Join me for a serious and humorous discussion of humor and ethics (if that’s possible). Before coming to the Center for Learning Innovation I taught as a teaching assistant at the University of Miami from 2006-2010, where I received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award in 2008, as an adjunct professor at Miami-Dade College, and as a full-time Visiting Lecturer at Florida International University from 2010-2012.
