Heart of the City Community Update: Meet the Artists Lunch Presentation

Destination Medical Center Heart of the City Sub-district Community Update – Invitation to meet the artists contributing to Phase 1 redesign

On October 18, all four world-renowned artists will be in Rochester to share their works-in-progress with the community. DMC and the City of Rochester invite you to an open house and lunch presentation on at Castle Community.

Lunch Presentation: 12 PM – 1:15 PM, program will start promptly at 12 PM

Come early or stay late for the unique opportunity to meet the artists and Heart of the City design team.

Open House: 11 AM – 12 PM and 1:15 – 2:30 PM

Over the past 12 months, DMC and the City of Rochester have invited the community to participate in the redesign process of Peace Plaza. From integrating universal design elements to enhancing the current Peace Fountain, every inch of space has been considered down to the smallest detail. We invite you to continue to be part of the dialogue in this design process by imagining how the integration of art can transform one of our most valued public spaces. The final elements to be fit into place are the installations of four artists whose previous works have been featured around the world.

Eric Anderson – Rochester, MN

Ann Hamilton – Columbus, OH

Rafael Lozano Hemmer – Montreal, Quebec

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle – Chicago, IL

Each installation has been carefully integrated into the design of Heart of the City: Phase 1. The art provides new life to the plaza as part of the Destination Medical Center’s quality of life and public realm initiatives. The artworks were developed through a collaborative process that integrated artists and curators within the design team. Collectively, the design of the plaza and its embedded artworks encourage us to be present in this place — both in moments of personal introspection and shared spectacle. Together these artworks create layered stories of time and place within the plaza that, due to the interactive and responsive nature of the works, will never repeat. Each visit to the plaza, whether for an event or alone, will offer new discoveries.

Considerations When Joining a Startup

  • Mayo Clinic Business Accelerator (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Startups provide employment exciting opportunities to our community. Examples are full-time employment, part-time, advising, consulting, joining boards, etc.

But, startups generally pay less in salary than more established employers. Then, why would you want to consider working for startup? And how can you understand the implication of equity-based compensation?

We have assembled a panel with a founder, a financial advisor and a lawyer that can help put context to this puzzle.

For instance:
-How does compensation in startups compare with "traditional" employment?
-What is equity-based compensation? Vesting schedules?
-Can I do consulting and get paid in stock? What are the tax implications?

Presenters:
- Aaron Keenan, Founder of Sonex Health, Inc.
- Rob Landgraf, CFP, Director RSM US Weath Management LLC
- Gregory Griffiths, Dunlap and Seeger PA

Moderator:
- Xavier Frigola, PhD. Director of Entrepreneurship for RAEDI.

Business Legends LIVE - Garwin McNeilus

Southeastern Minnesota has always been a hotbed for entrepreneurs that have made their indelible mark on the world. Often we think we know their stories, but do we really? Join us for our first “Business Legends LIVE” Series a new podcast recorded LIVE from the Rochester Entrepreneurial Community. Our first guest will be Garwin McNeilus. Garwin will tell the story of creating multiple companies and his philosophy of business and philanthropy.

About Garwin
Garwin McNeilus was raised in the Dodge Center, Minnesota area and began his career as a construction worker, helping to build a ready-mix plant in Rochester, MN. In 1964, he built his own ready mix plant in Dodge Center. Garwin founded McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing in 1970, when he began buying, refurbishing, and selling used ready-mix trucks. By 1975, McNeilus Companies had developed a technology in manufacturing that they felt surpassed existing technology. MTM became the largest manufacturer of concrete mixers and refuse packers in the world. After selling the manufacturing company to Oshkosh Truck Corporation retirement was not in store for Garwin. He has been able to continue as well as expand on development of Orphanages and Schools in needy areas throughout the world. By 2000 he had opened a new office and taken a special partner, his grandson, Grant, into the wind power generation industry. Garwin is presently active with the production of One-Day Churches and Schools at his shop in Dodge Center.

One of the most common critiques of new Rochester residents is that "there's nothing to do" compared to bigger metropolitan areas. While we may not be NYC or Chicago (yet), a closer look at Rochester's Art Scene will show a lot of new energy propelling the local industry to vibrancy. This event will highlight that new energy in traditional institutions like the Rochester Civic Theater and the Rochester Art Center, as well as new organization like Gray Duck Theater & Coffeehouse and The Rochester Posse.
